"Tochigi Humane Society Switches to Anesthetics to Put Down Cats, Dogs" BUT....

First looking at this article: "Tochigi Humane Society Switches to Anesthetics to Put Down Cats, Dogs"

http://news.goo.ne.jp/article/shimotsuke/region/shimotsuke-34064244.html

Tochigi Prefecture is working hard. They've reconsidered the holding period for stray before putting them down, and most recently switched to using anesthetics instead of gassing them.

However, what I want you to notice is that, while this says"anesthetics", it doesn't specifically say "euthanasia"

Is it an intraperitoneal? An intravenous injection?

If it's an intraperitoneal, they would be using  a painfully fat needle to inject all the medicine in at once straight into the stomach.

If it's an intravenous injection, they need to check for the veins, but there are a lot of dogs and cats that would freak out or start biting out of fear-what would they do then?

I tried to ask, but they didn't give me a clear answer-just that they were "using the appropriate methods'

However, putting myself in the shoes of such veterans, I presume there would be a heavy emotional burden on using my own hands to take the lives of so many cats and dogs-especially if I would have to do it to multiple animals day after day. I would certainly have heavy feelings-
I didn't become a vet to just take lives like this.

In all honesty, the first thing I worried about when I read this article was that it might make bringing in one's pet more easily done and increase the number of animals to be put down.

I'm sure there are people out there thinking that anesthetics=euthanasia, and that if they bring in their pet, they will die comfortably and without pain. And if people keep thinking this and bring in their pets without really thinking hard about it, the numbers of animals will go up.

When the pets are brought in, they're put down the very same day. and so  I think it is only right for the owners to be with them when they die-and not only face what they're putting their once- pet through. but also take home the body. I want them to really know what suffering they just put them through.Cases of abandonment might be another story, though.

My point here today is that we should support no-kill policies, but which still shouldn't be excuses for heartless owners to throw away their dogs.
